Lizzie Stables, who plays Eliza in Unearthed, talks about the play and why she loves working in the south west.
What was the inspiration behind Unearthed?
Unearthed was Folio‘s debut production and Alys Metcalf’s first full length play. We worked with Alys for several months to come up with the story and to develop the script, and it went in a lot of different directions before ended up where it is now! We wanted to tell a story that was familiar to our audiences, whilst also raising awareness for important issues that are close to our hearts. Both Alys and I have had family members affected by Stroke and were interested in telling the story of the way that this affects not only the person but their family. We were determined that, though it contains sad subject matter, the play should be uplifting. We wanted to set the play in the South West as it’s an area we’re both extremely fond of, having grown up there, and that we feel is under represented in contemporary theatre.
What do you hope audiences will take away from the production?
We first toured the play in 2015 and the response from our audiences was overwhelmingly positive. We were struck by how many people felt the story struck a chord with them, and how relatable it was. The play is extremely funny, as well as being poignant and heartwarming. Audience feedback is that they found watching Unearthed to be a very uplifting and cathartic experience. Something that has struck us since starting work on Unearthed is how much brilliant work Carers do, and how this often goes unreported. We hope that our audiences will also go away with more awareness about Carers, and in particular Young Carers, and how selfless they are.
What excites you most about living and working in the south west?
I founded Folio in 2014 in order to create more opportunities to work in the South West and with other creatives from the area, which is where I grew up. Before working with Folio I felt very much tied to London and I missed my home! There are so many brilliant venues and companies in the South West and it’s really exciting to be a part of that. Folio’s mission is to create and tour stories set in the South West and share them with audiences in the area and further afield through touring, spreading the magic of the South West throughout the UK. Being a part of Fest West is something we’re immensely excited by and we can’t wait to perform Unearthed and also to watch all the other brilliant work that’s on offer.
